Police raid alleged hemp seed suppliers |
YOKOHAMA--The Kanagawa prefectural police on Thursday raided four locations, including a shop in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, that allegedly sold hemp seeds, in an attempt to confirm and crack down on channels whereby the seeds are illegally imported and supplied.
| Illegally cultivating hemp from seeds has became a social problem in the nation recently, especially among young people.
Under existing legislation, people can only import heat-treated hemp seeds that cannot germinate.
| | However, the shops are believed to have smuggled from the Netherlands seeds that have not had the mandatory heat treatment. The shops were suspected of violating the Cannabis Control Law.
