A top division sumo wrestler was arrested Monday on suspicion of possessing a Russian-made cigarette containing marijuana, police said.
Police searched the home of the 20-year-old Russian wrestler on Monday and the Magaki sumo stable to which he belongs, and seized a smoking pipe and other items. The grappler was arrested on suspicion of violating the Cannabis Control Law.
Investigators said the wrestler dropped his wallet, which contained his alien registration card, on the street in the area the same day.
A woman picked up the wallet and took it immediately to a police box, leading to the discovery of the drugs, police said.
The wrestler, who holds a maegashira rank, had a record of four wins and 11 losses in the July Grand Sumo Tournament.
