A court has heard that Daniel Purcell, the 23-year-old son of Queensland MP and former government minister Pat Purcell, would routinely buy 200 ecstasy pills each week, selling 140 of them and – perhaps more alarmingly – consuming the remaining 60 himself.
Purcell was arrested on Saturday, caught in the Brisbane party-precinct Fortitude Valley with 160 pills hidden in his underpants.
Supported by his father and brother in court, it’s claimed Purcell has a ‘psychological addiction’ to ecstasy. “He told police that he sells the tablets to fund his habit,” police prosecutor Sergeant Kerrilee Lovaszy said in court.
Pat Purcell made headlines earlier this year, claiming he was going to quit politics over an assault scandal.
Ecstasy is "dirty drugs". Its not the MDMA that kills you but the shit they mix it with - stick with home-grown weed instead
In 2007, while Emergency Services minister, Purcell assaulted two senior public servants. He initially lied about his involvement but later came clean and was subsequently removed from the State Government Ministry.
Due to return to court in August, Daniel Purcell was released on bail and ordered to report to police twice each week and submit random drug tests.
