LORDSBURG, N.M. -- Border Patrol agents have seized more than a half-ton of marijuana and 26 pounds of cocaine in two separate stops in southern New Mexico.
Agents seized 1,160 pounds of marijuana after an Air and Marine Operations pilot spotted a pickup truck driving off road and through fences south of Animas on Wednesday. The pilot said the truck had shredded tires and was badly damaged.
While agents from the Border Patrol office in Lordsburg were responding, a second vehicle drove north from Mexico, picked up the driver and a passenger and returned to Mexico, the Border Patrol said.
When agents arrived, they found 60 bundles of marijuana valued at more than $928,000.
The truck, reported stolen from Tucson was turned over to the New Mexico State Police.
The cocaine was seized at a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 25 north of Las Cruces after a drug-sniffing dog alerted agents to a sports utility vehicle Wednesday. Agents then discovered 10 bundles of cocaine valued at $832,000 inside a hidden compartment, the Border Patrol said.
The driver, a 36-year-old woman from Albuquerque, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Her name was not released.
