Tangier, Nov. 24 - The Tangiers port customs on Friday intercepted some 900kg of cannabis resin onboard a TIR truck, en route to Europe via Spain.
| Customs officers, who operated jointly with the port police, discovered, in the truck's two large tanks, an important quantity of drugs stored in tight packaging to protect it from fuel. Preliminary investigation revealed that the illegal substance was bound for the Spanish market. |  | The driver, a Moroccan who was heading for Algesiras (south of Spain), was arrested and an investigation was launched to identify the people involved in this operation.

The Port’s security services carried out, during the few past days, 5 separate counter-drug operations, during which some 161 kg of drugs were seized, and four Moroccans and two Spaniards were arrested.
The overall value of the seized drug (1061 kg) is estimated at more than USD 7.4Mn on the European market.
On September 18, the customs at the port of Tangiers, arrested a Spanish national who was trying to smuggle about half a ton of hashish (435 kg) to Europe.
Customs and security services of the port of Tangier have lately stepped up crackdown operations on drug smugglers who try to take advantage of the peak period of the flow of passengers heading for Europe, especially the Moroccan expatriates returning home after vacations in Morocco.
In 2006, thanks to a mobile scanner, some 28.6MT of drugs were seized, and 250 people were arrested in 196 operations.
