Three Cork mothers jailed over cannabis 'day-trip' |
Three 27-year-old Cork mothers who drove to Dublin on a "day out" to pick up €140,000 worth of cannabis have been jailed for 12 years in total.
| Vivienne O'Donovan, Farranferris Green, Farranree; Nicola Duggan, Dublin Street, Blackpool; and Niamh Tracey, Fairhill Drive, Fairhill; got four, five and three years respectively for their part in the operation, during which they were caught "red-handed."
The three mothers had driven from Cork to Dublin to collect the cannabis, but got lost on the way home and ended up near the airport, where they were stopped and searched by the Drug Squad.
| | Judge Frank O'Donnell said the operation was organised by Nicola Duggan on behalf of an unknown third party to distribute the drugs around Cork.
|
He said Gardai described the three as very cooperative and remorseful, but regarded them as naive, stupid and foolish.
He said the expedition started off as a day trip to Dublin and that Ms Tracey seemed to think she was going for a spin and O'Donovan provided the car.
The judge remarked that they didn't know what kind of drugs or the quantity they were transporting.
In jailing all three, he said the last message that should go out is that it is alright to send young mothers to Dublin to ferry back potential lethal weapons in the form of drugs to Cork.
