Man kept explosives in fridge |
A 47-year-old West Coast man who kept explosives in an old fridge has been blasted by a judge.
| Terry Parkinson, of Mawheraiti in Buller, pleaded guilty in Westport District Court yesterday to unlawful possession of the explosives and cannabis.
He was sentenced to 60 hours of community work. Prosecutor Al Manco said police found two grams of cannabis on a shelf when they went to Parkinson's home on an unrelated matter. | | | In a subsequent search of the house they found two sticks of power gel, four detonators and a fuse cord in an old broken fridge. |
Parkinson had no qualification or licence to hold the items, which were subject to strict storage requirements.
He told police he had obtained the explosives when a licence was not needed and was unaware of the new requirements.
He had used them to blow up old tree stumps on his lifestyle block near Reefton.
Defence counsel Doug Taffs said the cannabis was for Parkinson's own use.
He accepted that he had stored the explosives wrongfully but had been ignorant of the law.
Judge John Strettell said it was beyond belief that Parkinson had kept the explosives stored in such a dangerous way for so long.
He had put himself and others in danger.
"The chance of them becoming unstable is unbelievably high."
Parkinson told the judge the fridge was not working but had a good seal and he had no neighbours.
