NZ: Big night of crime lands man in jail
How much crime can a man can fit into one night?

Samuel Storm White stole and crashed two cars and a truck after trying to bribe four teenagers to help him manufacture P by offering them cannabis in return.

"April 14 was a big day for you," chief district court judge Russell Johnson told White, 23, at the Blenheim District Court yesterday.

White, a vineyard worker of Blenheim and father of two, admitted three charges of theft, one of burglary, dangerous driving, attempting to procure a precursor substance, namely pseudoephidrine, four counts of offering to supply cannabis to persons aged under 18, driving while forbidden, giving false information to police, entering a building and several breaches of bail.

Judge Johnson said on April 14 White left a party he was at and headed for an Alabama Rd driveway where he decided to steal a Toyota Celica.

After moving another car which blocked the Toyota, he got in but rather than backing out he drove it forward into a garage door.

White then reversed into the side of the house, before hitting a letterbox and a fence, Judge Johnson said.

White fled and soon found a Nissan ute parked in a driveway at Westhaven Pl with its keys in the ignition.

Judge Johnson said White drove the ute a short distance before crashing into another fence. "It got stuck in the fence and you ran away."

In White's final offence of the night, Judge Johnson said he went to a construction yard where he scaled a barbed wire fence and found an Isuzu truck, again with the keys in the ignition.

White drove it through a padlocked gate, driving at such speed that he buckled the gate, and headed up Taylor Pass Rd.

Eight kilometres later he lost control and swerved, losing the contents of the truck's trailer, Judge Johnson said.

He continued another four kilometres before losing control again and crashing down a one metre bank.

From there White went to a farmhouse but the occupants became suspicious of his story, Judge Johnson said, and called police.

White suffered spinal injuries from the crash.

On April 10 White tried to buy cold medication, used to manufacture the drug P, at two Blenheim pharmacies under a false name.

He was unsuccessful and on April 14 he talked to four teenagers at a party about manufacturing P, and suggested they buy the medicines for him in exchange for cannabis.

Judge Johnson said in February White caused intentional damage by standing on and damaging the bonnet and roof of a friend's car in Dunedin.

On March 28 White was found driving while suspended and gave police a false name.

Defence council Bryony Senior said White had been offending almost continuously since February after moving to Blenheim from Mosgiel with the "good intentions" of finding work.

She said much of his offending was fuelled by alcohol but White did not think he was an alcoholic.

"None of (the offending) was well planned or well executed.

"For most of it there's no other word than stupid."

Judge Johnson said there was no chance that White could ever pay for damage he caused, which was thousands of dollars.

He sentenced him to several terms of imprisonment, all to run concurrent and to total eight months without leave to apply for home detention.

On the charge of burglary, White was sentenced to eight months imprisonment, another eight months each for stealing the vehicles plus reparation of $150, three months each for procuring pseudo-ephidrine and offering to supply cannabis and one month for dangerous driving.

Judge Johnson also disqualified White from driving for a year for dangerous driving.

For intentional damage White was sentenced to one month imprisonment and ordered to pay $2500 in reparation.

On driving while forbidden, giving false information to police and breaching bail White was convicted and discharged.
