Burglars lead police to Bristol cannabis 'factory'
Two burglars uncovered a massive cannabis factory when they broke into a semi-detached house in Stapleton.

Neighbours called the police when they saw two men breaking into the house and officers arrived in time to catch them red handed – and discover the drugs den.

They were arrested and found to have a quantity of the Class C drug they had stolen from the house.

Officers found almost 400 plants – with an estimated street value of about £400,000

inside the house, which had been turned into a state-of-the-art growing factory.
Among the officers who raced to the scene was Chief Constable Colin Port, dressed in plain clothes during a three-day stint working undercover alongside officers on the front line.

Forensic officers spent most of yesterday at the 1930s four-bedroomed property in Ronald Road, bagging up the evidence.

Officials said there were 243 plants spread across every room in the house and another 150 cropped plants, which had recently been harvested.

The house, estimated to be worth up to £275,000, is just 100 metres from Begbrook Primary School.

Head teacher Ian Purnell said: “I am shocked that something like this has happened in the area, but I am delighted the police are handling it.

“I feel for the community and for those that live near to it. There is a strong community spirit in the Begbrook area and things like this can make the community come closer together.”

It is the third cannabis raid in the Stapleton and Begbrook area in the past six months.

No one is understood to have been living at the house in Ronald Road, which was sold about six months ago.

Neighbours say they saw someone going in and putting curtains up at every window.

Many residents thought the house was empty.

Pam Williams-Lock, chairwoman of Stapleton and Begbrook Community Centre, said: “It is the third one in six months in this area.

“You used to be able to look out of the window and know everyone in this community – you hardly know anyone now.

“We've had our suspicions about the house for a while.”

One neighbour said: “The first I knew about this was when I saw a police car turn up, but within a few hours there were seven police cars.

“The chief constable was even here. He was in plain clothes and appeared to be undercover – it's good to see him out on the beat rather than stuck being a desk.”

Another neighbour said: “What has the world come to when burglars know where cannabis factories are and are breaking in to steal some of the drugs?

“A few years ago you'd have never expected this.

“I am shocked that this has happened on my doorstep but not all that surprised “

Police spokeswoman Clare Giordmaine said: “Upon arriving at the property police saw two men leaving the rear of the house through the garden, jumping over the fence to get away. Officers gave chase and caught them in Alberton Road. Both were arrested on suspicion of burglary and a small quantity of Class C drugs was found on one of the suspects.”
