Campaigner’s cannabis call
A CAMPAIGNER handed a 5,000-signature petition to 10 Downing Street demanding a re-think on cannabis laws.

Jim Starr, 34, from Dorchester, suffers from severe lower back pain and is fighting for the right for medicinal cannabis users to be able to self-medicate without the fear of prosecution.

He said: "I'm someone who never ever took chemical drugs before I was in pain from my disability and have been forced to take morphine as I cannot cope with the pain I suffer.

Do you run the risk of arrest simply for wishing to improve the quality of your life? Joinus on the Canna Zine cannabis forums as we strive to halt the senseless reclassification of cannabis.

"With all the prescribed medication I am on, I still have uncontrollable muscle spasms and pain.
"Cannabis is the only drug which gets me up and about out of bed, so I can stop crying due to the acute chronic pain.

"It's a life or death drug for me and others like me."

Mr Starr said he wrote to Prime Minister Gordon Brown but when he received no response he began collecting signatures, which he delivered to Downing Street.

He is now planning a protest at Home Secretary Jacqui Smith's hometown of Redditch on Saturday, October 18, from 11am until 7pm.

Mr Starr said he was angry about Ms Smith's intention to reclassify cannabis as a class B rather than a class C drug. The move from class C would see the maximum prison sentence for possessing cannabis rise from two years to five years.

Mr Starr said this would make life even more difficult for medicinal users and said he had already suffered from buying contaminated cannabis from back-street dealers.

He said: "Some grit weed I got locally was found to be sprayed with ground glass so the dealers got more money for their cannabis as more weight means more money.

"This affected my mouth and lungs and left me spasming up severely in pain.

"All cannabis users need clean cheap access to this life-altering drug.

"Without cannabis, euthanasia is my only option in life."

He added: "I'm fighting for the medicinal use of cannabis but I'm also standing up for recreational users as well."
