Kent pilot flying convicted drug-smuggler charged with producing cannabis

A Kent pilot who flew a convicted drug smuggler in a light aircraft which crash-landed in a garden has been charged with the production of cannabis.

Sidney Clark was arrested by officers following a raid at his home near Maidstone three days after the plane crash in February this year.

The 48-year-old was charged with one count of production of cannabis, two counts of possession of cannabis and one count of abstraction of electricity.

Clark, of Tonbridge Road, Barming, has been bailed to appear before magistrates in Maidstone on May 13.

His passenger, Tim Des Vignes, 53, was on day release from the category C/D resettlement prison Blantyre House in Goudhurst, near Cranbrook in Kent, at the time of the crash.

The Cessna 172 plane carrying the pair came down in trees at a house in Farthing Common, near Folkestone, during foggy conditions shortly after taking off from Rochester Airport on February 23.

Both men escaped from the wreckage with minor injuries.

They were treated at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford before being released.

Des Vignes was coming to the end of an eight-year sentence for importing drugs.

The incident sparked an investigation by the Ministry of Justice.
