Armed suspect shot, killed by deputy near marijuana grow |
EUREKA, Calif.—An armed suspect who authorities said threatened officers with a gun near a marijuana plantation was shot to death.
| Two Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies went to Pacific Lumber Co. property Wednesday as part of an investigation into marijuana plantations. The deputies were confronted by an armed man, | | | and one of the officers fired, killing the suspect, a sheriff's department spokesman said. |
Marijuana plantings on private timber and public lands have been an increasing problem, and a focus of the state's Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, said Jack Nelsen, an agent with the Humboldt County Drug Task Force.
Because harvest time is near, marijuana growers are more willing to defend the plantations in the fall, Nelsen said.
"The plants are a lot more valuable now," he said.
Both deputies will remain on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
