Beaver County parents save dogs, marijuana, forget child |
When a nearby fire threatened their mobile home, a Beaver County couple rescued their dogs and marijuana, but left behind a 4-year-old boy, authorities said.
| One of four firefighters who entered the burning trailer at Tate's Mobile Home Park in Center, found the boy crying in the corner of a bedroom, Center fire Chief Bill Brucker said.
"It blows my mind. I'm a father of three children. When they brought that boy out, it hits you totally," Brucker said Tuesday.

Center police on Monday charged the boy's father, James Chandler, 33, and his girlfriend, Crystal Adams, 31, with reckless endangerment.
Police also charged Adams with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Center police Chief Barry Kramer said Adams tried to get rid of a plastic bag containing less than 1 ounce of marijuana, but that an officer saw her place it on the trunk of a vehicle and then try to hide it in her pants.
The boy, Adam Chandler, was treated at the Medical Center, Beaver, for smoke inhalation. Kramer could not comment on who has custody of the child now. A representative of Children and Youth Services also said he could not comment.
The Beaver County District Attorney's Office, which recommended charging the couple, did not return calls for comment.
Police knocked on Chandler and Adams' door shortly before midnight Friday to evacuate them because a neighboring trailer was on fire, court documents show. They were concerned about getting two dogs out, and told an officer that no other people or animals were inside.
Chandler told police he had earlier seen two boys running between the trailers, and walked around the park with an officer showing the officer where the boys lived. It was about 20 minutes after officers arrived, and as the fire began to spread to Chandler and Adams' trailer, that they told police they had forgotten Adam was inside, court documents said.
"It could've been a much worse outcome. Ten more minutes of them forgetting their son was in there could've been fatal," Brucker said.
Chandler and Adams face preliminary hearings on the charges, all misdemeanors, at 11 a.m. Oct. 23 at the Beaver County Courthouse.
One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and heat stress at The Medical Center and released, Brucker said.
Both trailers were destroyed. Kramer said police are still investigating the cause of the fire, which he said is considered suspicious. It followed a fire in another abandoned trailer at the same park late Wednesday, Brucker said.
