Drugs

As I mentioned a week or two back, the Home Office is consulting on its Drug Strategy for 2008 onwards. The closing date is 19.10.07. I attach below my contribution to the debate. In a nutshell, I’m advocating the repeal of the Misuse of Drugs Act and the consequent legalisation and regulation of all drugs. I hope my paper is self-explanatory.

I will be presenting my paper to a public meeting of North Wales Police Authority on Monday 15.10.07. I will be complementing the paper with a presentation, largely of information culled from a report by the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit in 2003.  I find it quite literally amazing to see what the Prime Minister was being told about the worth and prospects of the ‘war on drugs’ as long ago as 2003.  I’m not going to spoil my own thunder by loading the presentation onto the Blog just yet – but it will be there after the meeting, together with my account of how it went down.

Should be another exciting week, I think.

I have no problem in principle with decriminalisation and replace it with system's of regulation and treatment, but those treatment's must be in place especially mental health services to deal with the psychptic effects of cannabis use. As we know by the ever increasing numbers of people with mental health problems ending up in Police cells, the NHS just cannot cope with existing problems not to mention the additional problems that decriminalisation will bring.
