Viagra/Cialis Look Set to Treat Erectile Dysfunction AND High Blood Pressure all at the same time
As if the web-surfers of the world are not already subjected to enough advertisments for the popular erectile dysfunction treatments Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, it appears the long-suffering public are to be exposed to even more adverts extolling the virtue of impotence treatments, but this time, for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). More commonly known as high blood pressure.
It’s not going to drive any company’s stock (except perhaps UT’s), but Pfizer’s Revatio grew 30 percent to $94 million in Q2 2009; it’s one of few Pfizer drugs growing. The market is dominated by Actelion’s Tracleer with $1.5 billion in global sales; $750 million in the U.S.
So United Therapeutics has finally persuaded the FDA to approve Eli Lilly's ED med Cialis (tadalafil) as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Marketed under the name Adcirca, the drug will compete with treatments from Pfizer (Revatio), Actelion (Tracleer), and Gilead Sciences (Letairis).
And it's not the only ED-type med on this particular shelf; Revatio contains the same primary ingredient as Pfizer's bestselling ED drug.
ED drugs are being tested for all sorts of non-ED uses, usually as treatments for circulatory problems of one sort or another. Will this new indication be the last? Or not?
