Page 6 of 6 HID vs flouro Its worth mentioning that fluorescent lighting technology advancement has come on in leaps & bounds in the last few years. It wasn’t all that long ago that fluorescent strip lighting was the domain of the shop window, or your mums kitchen. But now you can find a fluorescent light bulb for any application. If your growing ‘long day’ flowering or fruiting annuals, which will flower regardless of the photo-period, then fluorescent lighting will prove the more cost efficient option. But if you’re growing ‘short day’ flowering or fruiting plants, (plants which depend on the naturally occurring shortening of daylight as the year grows older), then the ‘daylight’ hours you give to your plants are absolutely crucial and you need to make sure you give them all you can. As technology advances, maybe sometime soon you will be able to run start to finish under environmentally friendly fluorescent lighting. Until then, HID remains the daddy of indoor horticultural lighting.
