The disease causes abnormal growth of intestinal epithelium and the stomach’s production of villi. These villi become sensitive to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and other grains.

While CBD has not been evaluated in patients with this condition, anecdotal reports from those who have used CBD suggest the possibility of a reduction in pain and an improved ability to tolerate weight loss. While these benefits are exciting, the primary use of CBD is to treat symptoms of nausea, weight loss, sleep problems and other symptoms of celiac disease. The anti-anxiety effect of CBD may also aid in reducing the symptoms of the disease. Since CBD is a nonpsychotic stimulant, it may work as an appetite suppressant, similar to the effects of Adderall.

The pharmaceutical companies are currently developing different compounds for the treatment of this disease. One way they hope to achieve their ends is by introducing CBD into the body through different dietary sources. Evidence is also emerging that CBD may be effective in reducing the symptoms of arthritis and other chronic inflammation conditions. With this therapeutic effects, CBD for celiac disease may be worth trying in order to relieve symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients who suffer from this disease.

The two fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) enzymes, which are responsible for the assembly and regulation of fat within cells, produce an abundance of medium chain fatty acids or MCT. These chains are known as short interfering amino acids (MCTs). Unlike longer chain fatty acids (LCFA), MCTs do not get broken down by intestinal cells. This renders them less digested and therefore easier for the liver to extract for use in treating celiac diseases.

Apart from acting as an appetite suppressant, CBD can also promote weight loss in some experimental animals. In one study, rats were given CBD solutions before eating a high-calorie diet. Remarkably, the rats displayed no significant change in weight. However, when the researchers gave the animals oral doses of a different faah enzyme, the rats significantly responded to the increased availability of glucose, thereby exhibiting signs of obese behavior.

As of date, very limited studies have been conducted on the effect of CBD on the intestines of patients with celiac disease. One of the major limitations of these studies is the absence of controls or control groups. Therefore, it is difficult to evaluate the safety and the effectiveness of CBD for celiac patients. The only report states that CBD may cause diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain in experimental animals. This symptom has also been reported by patients of patients with diabetes. Hence, there is no conclusive evidence as to whether CBD is useful for treating diabetes, but it does have an anti-diarrheal effect on patients with celiac disease.
