Can CBD Help Reduce Airway Inflammation in COPD?
Is CBD a cure for COPD? Recent clinical trials with small experimental groups have hinted that it might be. However, results from larger placebo-controlled studies that have pooled data from around the globe have shown no definitive evidence that CBD can help patients with COPD or any other respiratory disease. This is contrary to what many researchers had been hoping for years.
COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a progressive condition of the lungs and other organs of the body that cause narrowing of airways, causing difficulty in breathing. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are two of the main types of COPD; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also often includes smoking, which leads to emphysema. In addition, smoking contributes to complications in other parts of the body, including liver, kidney, bones and joints. However, despite the fact that many experts had already predicted that they would find effective medicines to treat this disease, so far there has been no medicine available in the medical world till date. Only very recently, has clinical trials started on animals to test the effects of cannabidiol, a chemical found in marijuana, on the lungs and other parts of the body.
CBD is a CBD derivative, a natural ingredient that does not contain any chemical cannabidiol. It has been tested on animals and proved to be highly effective in reducing symptoms of airway obstruction and improving airway function. This is why it is being studied now. It is believed that CBD reduces inflammation of the airway and improves its functions. Therefore, it can potentially reduce or eliminate the causes of COPD.
The health benefits of cannabis are not new. Research from several decades ago indicated that it might have some positive effect on human health conditions, such as asthma and certain types of cancer. A lot of researchers had then gone on to study the health benefits of using cannabis in reducing respiratory problems. After years of experiments, it was observed that there were significant reductions in symptoms and lung inflammation in people who were treated with medicinal marijuana.
It is important to note that although CBD may reduce airway obstruction and reduce symptoms of certain diseases, it cannot cure COPD or even alleviate its symptoms. The studies and experiments carried out by several health organizations did not yield the results desired. The most common results of these experiments were the development of tolerance and addiction to the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabidiol. Scientists do not yet know whether this will lead to a breakthrough or if chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be completely eliminated by using this compound.
It is already known that smoking marijuana carries a number of serious health complications including the fact that it is a major cause of airway inflammation, which is the precursor of various respiratory disorders. However, the new findings show that the same compound that has been found to be effective in treating certain respiratory ailments can also significantly reduce the airway inflammation in people who suffer from COPD. The study concluded that the reduction in inflammation was the main reason why patients were able to substantially reduce the frequency of their hospital admissions due to respiratory illness. Even people who already have COPD were found to recover from their respiratory illness when they started taking cannabidiol.
Another important finding of this study was the effect of CBD on the other organs of the body when it is taken orally. In the lungs, where the inflammation is the main problem, CBD appears to have very significant health benefits. In fact, there were considerable increases in the levels of important compounds in the lungs such as sarsaparilla and caryophylline when patients took part in the study. Other than this, there were no significant changes noted in the heart or any other of the body systems. There are still more studies that need to be conducted to assess the exact benefits of CBD on COPD and other related diseases. However, the current results clearly indicate that this plant extract is very beneficial for reducing the inflammation in patients who are suffering from respiratory illness.
Although it is not yet clear how the extracts affect the respiratory system, experts believe that the effects are very important for patients who are suffering from COPD. Moreover, they can be used as substitutes for the pharmaceutical drugs, which are currently prescribed for COPD patients. This is because the effects of CBD are much milder than those of the conventional drugs, which means it can still produce the same beneficial effects without producing any side effects. Furthermore, the CBD does not cause any sedation or anxiety when taken in small amounts. With these facts, experts believe that CBD can help reduce airway inflammation in COPD patients while speeding up the healing process.
